Concern about the phenomenon known as global warming has been growing in recent years. Earths temperature is rising, largely as a result of human activity. Since the Industrial Revolution, humans have added significantly to the greenhouse gases in the Earths atmosphere through increases in activities such as cutting down forests and burning fossil fuels like coal and oil. Greenhouse gases hold heat in the atmosphere, and to a certain extent, their presence is natural. An artificial increase in the amount of these gases, however, leads to a rise in temperatures on Earth.
The author of the passage emphasizes on the precarious nature of the global warming that has been increasing at an alarming pace in recent years. It provides certain examples and evidences that further accentuates its precariousness. The lecture is in concert with the passage and specifically emphasizes on the economic impacts of the Global Warming.
The passage provides various causes that leads to increase in the average earth temperature such as increase in the concentration of greenhouse gases. The most influential greenhouse gas, carbon dioxide has been continuously increasing due to increased emission from vehicles. The passage provides evidence such as increase in the average earth temperature by 1.5 degree Fahrenheit to suggest its dangerous impacts. It also discusses about the various weather changes that have resulted due to Global Warming. These weather changes trigger disastrous events such as floods, droughts and hurricanes endangering numerous plants and animal species. The author finally provides the economic impacts of the global warming by citing a report depicting a decrease in GDP and Per-capita consumption.
The lecture serves as an assistance to the passage by further highlighting the economic impacts of global warming particularly in the North Eastern United States. It says that the areas which used to be predominantly cold and snowy, are not as cold as before. This significantly affects the economy sector of these regions which primarily depend upon Ski industry and tourism. With less extreme winters, the amount of snow is reduced and so is the Ski business. The lecture not only describes the direct effects but also explains the indirect effects such as reduction of business in Local Hotels, Ski equipment as well as Gift shops. Along with ski industry, the speaker provides other examples such as less colorful Fall Foliage, consequently attracting a less number of tourists. The speaker also cites reports showing increase in average temperatures and decrease in average snowfall.
