The lecture apparently disproves what is argued in the reading material. According to the passage, the National Geographic Society substantiated that Peary's account was consistent and persuasive and they also declared that he had indeed reached the North Pole. However, the professor asserts that a closer scrutiny of this argument will display how flimsy it is. He, in turn, presents several evidence to demonstrate his statement.
To begin with, the lecturer maintains that the reading passage fails to take into account that one of his friends who attributed much money to him was working at the National Geographic Society. Plus, the committee did not examine his record thoroughly; thus, the conclusion made by the committee is not only unobjective but also sheerly biased. Therefore, the claim expressed in the reading is virtually indefensible and does not hold water.
Furthermore, the author affirms that there was a man called Tom Avery who have already conquered the difficulty to reach the North Pole in less than 37 days. Thus, Peary's claims are not impossible. On the contrary, the professor stands in stark opposition and counterattacks this viewpoint by explaining that why Tom Avery can accomplish the challenge in less than 37 days is that Tom Avery did not carry the food by himself. Plus, the weather during that time was quite good; therefore, Tom Avery can finish it in less than 37 days. However, Peary carried his food by himself and the weather during that time was quite extremely bad. This shows that their conditions are entirely different. Thus, the claim of the author is scanty of rationalities.
Last but not least, the passage may be plausible that the photograph can prove that Peary has reached the North Pole successfully. However, one critical point is left out of consideration. Pointed out by the professor, the reading passage thoroughly neglects the truth that the photos may have already become blurred and faded. Hence, we can not measure the accurate position of the Sun by calculating the shadows, and we can not even assure that the photograph was snapped at the North Pole.
