The author presents a view that the real talent of a popular musician can not be accurately assessed until a sufficient time has passed so that his fame does not influence an honest assessment. Although this might be true in some cases, but i am inclined to have a different opinion on the issue at hand.
It is every artist's dream to be at the pinnacle of his art and be appreciated world wide. It is inappropriate that proper credit is not given to a musician just by the fear of the fact that it might be his fame overpowering his talent. What good are the awards being given to a musician after his/her demise? I am of the view that true talent must be identified and rewarded during his/her own era rather than waiting for a substantial amount of time for an assessment as suggested in the except.
Moreover, there is a risk that there might emerge another talent in the near future that could completely obscure the previous musicians talents and hence lead to an unrealistic judgement depriving him for appropriate praise he/she is worthy for. It is also not justified to compare musicians from different eras as there is a large metamorphosis in the styles of music and musical instruments over the years.
An example might be found in one of the greatest contemporary musicians of India, A R Rehman. He has be aptly been awarded several oscars and other awards for excellence in his field and providing some spellbinding music to soothe our ears. It would have been unreasonable to wait for decades before identifying him as a true legend of his time.
However, one might argue that it would be appropriate to undertake a rigorous analysis over a duration of time to identify the musicians abilities comparing it with his/her contemporaries and past/future generations so that his current fame and "monopoly" does not impact the assessment. It will always be a risk that someones fame and reputation might interfere with a honest judgement, hence it would be suggested to take a wise decision on analyzing a musicians true talent and doing it over a longer time would be could be one of the solutions in that case.
To conclude, in my view it is essential to identify true talent and honor it with dignity and it is best done during the musicians lifetime so that he/she may feel satisfied of his achievements. Having said that, a wise call has to be taken on an honest analysis if there is a risk involved of the musicians fame interfering with the judgement.
