It is clear that, the metro networks of London, Paris and Tokyo are older and busier than those of Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles.
In fact, London underground system is the oldest, put into service in 1863 and has the longest route with 394 kilometers, which is double the length of the route in Paris (199 kilometers) . However, it can only carry 775 millions of passengers per year while Tokyo is the third largest underground system, but it can carry 1,927 millions of passengers per year.
In terms of the latter group, Kyoto system is the smallest, only 11 kilometres of route and 45 millions of passengers per year. In contrast, Washington DC has 144 millions of travelers, which is nearly triple the number of travelers in Kyoto. Lastly, Los Angeles is the newest underground, opened in 2001.
