TPO30-‘burning mirror’
The lecture and the passage discuss the truth about an ancient weapon called 'burning mirror' which have been used by Greek army during the battle with Roman navy. Although the passage claims that there are three reasons which could deny the reality of this weapon, the speaker refutes these ideas through a number of reasons which will be decribed in this report.
First of all, the passage points out that the ancient Greek were not as much as advanced in technology to create such a weapon which needed a large sheet of copper. The speaker, in contrast, rejects this by claiming that the large sheet of copper was not necessary due to the reason that they could use dozen of small copper sheets to produce this weapon.
Furthermore, unlike the passage which states that experiments indicate that by using this weapon, it takes a long time to set a ship on fire and it is should be considered that the Roman's ships were not still during the battle, the speaker argues that the Roman's ships had been not made fully by wood and for being waterproof in the ocean they had used pitches in their ships constructions. As a result, this pitches could set the ship on fire in a second. She also believes that the Greek army were quick enough to use this weapon on the moving ships.
Finally, although the passage says that in the ancient Greek there are more advanced weapon like flaming arrow to use instead of this mirrors, the professor disagrees by mentioning that the Roman navy was familiar with flaming arrow; therefore, they could escape from them by moving the ship. She states that this burning mirror were more practical and the Greek army could burn the Roman navy easier due to the fact that the Roman navy could not recognize the source of the fire.
