Question: Summarize the points made in the lecture. Being sure to explain how they cast doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Ethanol fuel
In this set of material, the reading passage is about disadvantages of replacement of gasoline in the US by ethanol fuel which is made from plants. The listening passage is a contrary lecture by a professor about the reading passage.
According to the reading passage ethanol is not an appropriate substance for gasoline in US; Because its consumption as a fuel produces carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. As a result, it does not help to prevent air pollution. In addition, plants are essential source for many animals, and if we use them as fuel, it will diminish food for animals and other species that depend on plants. Last, today US government helps in the form of tax subsidies for ethanol and if it does not continue her support of it, the price of ethanol will increase in compare with gasoline.
According to the lecture, the professor cast doubt on the points mentioned in the reading passage, firstly he claims that growing plants use carbon dioxide as a source of nutrition, as a result, they actually help for removing this gas from atmosphere. Second, we need cellulose parts of plants structure for producing ethanol, and these part of plants are not eaten by animals. then can not reduces animals' food. Third, if we decide use ethanol as fuel, we certainly increase its production in compare with today's situation. As a result, its availability will increase too, and this phenomenon reduces its price considerably.
Overall, the ideas mentioned in the listening passage oppose the ideas mentioned in the reading passage in that the professor is in agreement with the replacement of ethanol as fuel because of help of plants to refine the air, not being the cellulose as a food source for animals, and becoming economically process of ethanol preparation by addition amount of production.
