The author in the reading contends that impossible is maintaining a human presence on Venus, whereas the professor in the listening refutes the sustenance of human is possible.
To begin with, the author argues that the extremely high atmospheric pressure is likely to crush the landing spacecraft. However, the professor holds a different idea that establishing a station in the atmosphere rather than in the surface could solve the problem. A station floats at the 50 kilometers above the surface of Venus where the air pressure, lower than the surface, is equal to the normal pressure on the earth.
Moreover, the author deems that a constant supply of water and oxygen from Earth to Venus is impractical. On the country, the professor points out that water and oxygen can be produced from compounds. The compounds such as carbon dioxide or sulfuric gases filled in the atmosphere could be used in chemical reactions to make these living essentials.
Finally, the author claims that since the thick clouds reflect and block a large portion of sunlight, only very little light is available on the surface and human could hardly get sufficient electricity to operate their machine by using the scarce solar power. As a refutation, the professor states that the station can get enough light 50 kilometers above the surface. At that level, the cloud is not very thick so that the station have a relatively easy access to the sunlight. And the professor adds that the station can use both direct sunlight and reflected light to generate electricity.
