All too often, companies hire outside consultants to suggest ways for
the company to operate more efficiently. If companies were to spend more time
listening to their own employees, such consultants would be unnecessary.
Efficiency is one of the major pillars of management, so it is understandable that organizations are willing to invest large amounts of their capital in consulting. However, some believe consulting does not have to be offered by a third party, and instead, employees can provide higher-quality advice. There are valid arguments on both sides, but I believe outside consultants provide more comprehensive suggestions for efficient company operation.
One of the arguments in favor of third-party consulting is expertise. Consulting companies usually employ empirical analysis methods that help identify the position of their client company in the market and, consequently, suggest effective amelioration strategies. It could be argued that employees know their company's history better and have first-hand experience of working for it, but employees' expertise is disparate from objective, scientific analysis conducted by a consulting company. Moreover, consulting firms know what exactly should be analyzed to identify issues within a short period of time because they have extensive experience of working with other businesses.
On the other hand, one could insist that employees' knowledge about organizational culture should not be underestimated. While this could be true, one must not forget about the fact that employees could be subjective in their judgement and provide responses skewed towards their self-interest. In addition, if an organization is large, it will take time for it to collect all responses and listen to employees from each department. Choosing the right data collection method and interpreting data could be beyond the company's management's expertise, which will require hiring a consulting company anyway.
In conclusion, it is clear why people might argue that listening to employees is effective in delineating the areas of improvement for a company. However, despite the fact that hiring a third-party consulting company might be more expensive, I am still convinced that it is worth it because the analysis of a company's operation is a serious matter that can only be delegated to experts.
