The bar chart reveals the proportion of households owing and renting accommodation in England and Wales from 1918 to 2011. Overall, it is conspicuous that households in owned accommodation shew a constant fallen trend, while those in rented accommodation suggested a rising pattern before 2001.
For households owned by individuals, the percentage rose continuously over the first 83 years. It started at approximately 23%, and stabilized as over 30% in both 1939 and 1953. Afterwards, it was not until 2001 that the figure for private households suggested a decline, dropping from almost 70% in 2001 to roughly 65% in 2011.
In terms of accommodation rented by people, the proportion began at nearly 77%, and also remained still as 68% over the next 35 years. During the period between 1961 and 2001, it reported a gradual fall from less than 60% to merely over 30% before it rose again as more than 35% in 2011.
By comparison, the figures for both private and rented accommodation appeared totally different patterns, and they reached the same proportion as 50% in 1971. Last but not least, not mentioned is that the combination of these two types of households was exact 100%.
