The reading and the lecture are both about the humpback whales where their migration on long distance is often puzzling. The reading passage claims three theories that support the idea that humpback whales navigate by stars. As opposed to, the lecturer who counters-argues that viewpoint, trying to prove that these three theories do not seem convincing.
First and foremost, the writer mentions that humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. In addition, their brain have a high degree of complexity. On the contrary, the professor cannot disagree more, reasoning that are other animals such as ducks
which are not intelligent enough compare to whales and they use the same way of navigation. Consequently, these has nothing to do with their intelligence but with their instinct.
The second argument the author gives is that whales migrate in straight lines. So, they can orient themselves better. However, the lecturer cannot be more outrages, explaining that are other evidence that shows that humpback whales have a bio-magnet in their brain that help them to follow the Earth's magnetic field. So, the sensitivity toward Earth's magnetic field would allow them to now their trajectory.
Lastly, on one hand, the reading passage points out that spy hopping is a unusual behavior that helps whales to float straight up and look upward. Nevertheless, the professor declares that other animals that do not migrate such as sharks use this behavior, too. In part of that, whales do that during the day which do not indicate the looking of stars,
In conclusion, although, the text suggest three theories that support the navigation of whales by stars, the lecturer believes that none of them are persuasive.
