Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they cast doubt on the points made in the reading passage. You have 20 minutes to type your response.
The passage states that using standardized tests will ensure that students will receive the best education, and gives three reasons for support. However, the lecturer claims that tests do not help for either schools or students to progress and attacks each of the arguments made by the author.
First, the author posits that tests are setting a strong standard of education for all schools to follow. However, the lecturer rebuts this idea. He says that these tests obstruct the freedom of education. As different students have many learning styles and interests, education must be fit according to their interests. There will be no power for teachers to choose the appropriate subjects.
Teachers need the independence these tests take away to teach effectively.
Second, the reading states that with these exams, schools become will be more accountable for the success of their students. Again, the lecturer disagrees. He explains that normally schools are founded according to the grades of its students and some schools may be punished with this system. He goes on to say that there are some schools in rough environments where students are not getting good grades because of the environment, not the quality of education. So, these schools need a different system for evaluation.
Third, the passage claims that the results of these exams can be used to provide help to those students who need it most. However, the lecturer refutes this point. He says that there are only a few standard exams for more than 100 schools and a lot of students. These tests are not fit for the different skills of students. Moreover, some students may be ill or under pressure so they might fail these exams. Leaving these students in the class does not guarantee that they will get help.
