The article states that transition from a 5 day workweek with 8 hours per day to a 4 day workweek with 10 hours per day will be beneficially in interest of the both employer and the employee. He has provided three reasons for the same. However, the professor explains that though the transition will not be beneficial for both the employer and the employee. He refutes each of the author’s reason by proving them weak point by point.
First, the reading states that the expenses of the employee will be reduced by reducing the number of working days in a week. The professor not refutes this point completely but he throws a light upon the daily expenses spend by an employee. He says that on an average an amount of 15-20 dollars per day is spent on commute. If the prices are compared yearly than the saving of 850 dollar per year is not great enough to bring about this huge change in the work culture.
Second, the reading states that the operational cost of a company will be reduced. The professor refutes this point as it is a misguide to the employer. If a company is taking one additional day off then it will be missing out on great business opportunities. In addition, the companies operational time is increased every day by 2 hours in which most of the employee tends to leave early from the office. Thus, leading to less productivity in the evening plus the business will be lost for one day in every week, to a Toal of 4 days a month.
Third, the author states that the employee will be able to spend more time with his/her family. The professor claims that this point is not as beneficial to employee as most of the married employee will have children in small age groups, so, they have to find a day care for their children with more hours. For the employees whose children are big enough for high school and college, they will be all tired and will reach home late to their children. Thus, spending less time with their family on daily basis. It will then lead to more emotional gap between the family.
In conclusion, the professor thinks that the reasons provided by the author are not good enough to bring about this huge change in the current working conditions.
