In some countries, small town-center shops are going out of business
because people tend to drive to large out-of-town stores. As a result, people
without cars have limited access to out-of-town stores, and this may result in
an increase in the use of cars.
Do you think the disadvantages of this change outweigh its advantages?
It is true that nowadays most people have been interested in shopping in large city shops due to the increasingly displacing of small town-center stores. And I reckon that this trend has both benefits and drawbacks effects.
One the one hand, there are two major drawbacks when people are going to use more cars for shopping.
Firstly, shopping in the larger stores in the city is a considerably time-consuming activity, since people have to travel in a long way to get to these shops, and maybe those could afford things what to want to. Secondly, the more people use private transport, the worst environmental conditions are. To be more specific, cars may release carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, in this way private transport contribute to the global warming of climate change.
On the other hand, the beneficial effects of this trend are more likely to be useful for local residents.
Firstly, there would be a higher demand for employment if more large stores were built in these areas since large shops usually are likely to need more employees. Workers, therefore, may be able to earn money and support their family for the cost of living. Secondly, large modern shops may have a variety of commodities than small shops. It means that occupants who are shoppers have a wide range of choices for them from these shops. For example, Ho Chi Minh City is well-known about huge malls, such as “Vincom Plaza” or “Nguyenkim Electricity Supermarket” that attracting a thousand people to come here on a regular basis to visit and buy things what they would like to afford.
In conclusions, although this trend is not without disadvantages, the upsides will justify these.
