The best way for a society to prepare it's young people for leadership in government, industry,or other fields is by instilling in them in a sense of cooperation, not competition.
While a bit of competition is necessary, the best way that a society can produce great leaders is by instilling a sense of co-operation and team management in them.
We must carefully look back in time, we have got some great leaders who have left their own imprints on the sands of time, right from Mahatma Gandhi of the pre-independent era to the Mark zuckerberg of the present times. The one quality that unifies all these leaders is their effective man-managing skill. The question of how efficiently someone can manage their team and how effectively he can convince his team to achieve an united goal. As far as I'm concerned, a true leader is one who skillfully inspires each and every individual of the group and extract all of his potential for useful work.We celebrate Dhoni as a great leader because he manages people well and extracts the best out of his team. We celebrate Mahatma Gandhi as the father of India because of his perseverence and team management skill.
A group can only succeed if only a single thought echoes throughout the entire group and the leaders job is to ensure that. A leader must hear out all his member's opinion and then must collectively make a decision. Obviously there will be difference of opinion in a group, Each will have their own view and the leader unless co-operate's with the group and understand them , he will surely cannot achieve the goal. The leader must listen to the problems of each of his team members and must solve them.
As leaders of our society, they are expected to solve problems and in most of the cases a problem can't be solved individually, these problems could be enviromental, technological, social. All the problems require a group which is leaded my a person who inspires them to solve a problem. With increasing population we will be facing huge problems and a united front is required to solve these problems. Ofcourse competetive spirit is required, it will drive the team to achieve things, but unless there is enough clarity of thoughts within the team members, it will only lead to futile efforts. Do we want our youngsters to be highly competetive martians like the Hitler's and the putin's. Absolutely not. We want leaders who efficiently manages and co-operates with people to achieve the various problems in the society.
Thus, instilling co-operation in students and younger people is rudimentary which when added with a th a bit of competetive can prove effective.
