glass and birds
Both the author and the lecturer discuss effectiveness of solutions that responsible businesses can use to prevent injuries to birds. The passage claims that there are several solutions that could be operative to prevent birds from harm. The professor, on the other hand, completely reject whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons.
First, both the author and the professor talk about one-way glass. According to the passage, one-way glass that is transparent in only one direction could be as a solid barrier and birds will not try to fly through it. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects author's view and illustrates the idea that birds confuse the one-way glass with a mirror so they approach to reflection of object in glass and get hurt.
Second of all, the reading and the lecture discuss colorful design. The author argues that designers can use stripes painted over the glass. By doing so, people would still be able to see through the openings in the design where there is no paint, while birds would see the strips and thus avoid trying to fly through the glass. However, the professor refutes this, saying that birds consider unpainted areas with open holes and they try to fly through them. To avoid this, unpainted spaces have to be very small which make the room of the building too dark.
Eventually, the passage and the lecturer address the subject of magnetic field. The passage goes on to mention that artificial magnetic field guide birds away from buildings because birds have an ability to sense magnetic fields. In contrast, the professor points out that birds use magnetic field to navigate just in long-distance migrations and in short-distance trips they use their eyes and brightness of light to find their direction.
All in all, the author maintains that there are several ways to stop bird's hit with glass, while professor not only cast doubt on it, but he also demonstrates that these solutions do not work efficiently.
