coins/Norse

TPO 44

both the author and the lecturer discuss whether the coin is genuine historical evidence or not. The passage claims that the coin is not a genuine piece of historical evidence but a historical fake. The professor, on the other hand, completely rejects whatever mentioned in the reading through citing three reasons. First, both the author and the professor talk about the distance between the maine site and norse site in Canada. According to the passage, the distance between the maine site and norse settlements in Canada is more than a thousand kilometers, suggesting the coin has no real connection with the settlements. The lecturer, nevertheless, rejects author's view and illustrates the idea that many objects was brought from faraway places to the state of maine in the United state. many Native americans brought commodity back to the maine from norse settlements. Second of all, both the reading and the lecture discuss other coins discovery. The author argues that no other coins have been found at the norse’s sites that were inhabited by the norse. therefore, norse did not bring any silver coins with them to their north american settlements. However, the professor refutes this saying that norse brought coins to north America and then brought back to Europe. Eventually, the passage and the lecture address the subject of value of coins as american’s currency. The passage goes on to mention that north americans did not recognize silver coin as money, so silver coins would most likely be useless to them. In contrast, the professor points out that silver coins were beautiful and north americans used them as necklace or other jewelry. therefore, norse could utilize coins to trade with americans. All in all, the author maintains that the coin is a historical fake and someone wanted to mislead the public, while the professor not only completely casts doubt on it, but he also demonstrates that the coin is a genuine piece of historical evidence.
