The author and the lecturer are both discussing how does stellers were extinct. While the author thinks that these sea cows were extinct in the mid seventeens by one of three theories mentioned in the passage, the lecturer refutes what is mentioned by the author and argues that there are severe problems with the points noted by the author. In addition, he says that nobody knows what actually caused stellers to be extinct. The lecturer provides some reasons to support his argument.
First, the author points out that probably these sea cows were hunted exceedingly by residents. The author mentions that stellers were huge animals that could feed a large group of people. On the other hand, the lecturer challenges this idea and claims that sea cows were such enormous animals that possibly could feed a small population of Siberian villagers for quite a long time. The lecturer believes that overhunting is not the reason that put the stellers' population to extinction since inhabitants did not need to kill plenty of the sea cows.
Next, the author puts forth the idea that possibly environmental destruction endangered sea cows' food source. The author notes that ecological shifts in stellers' habitats diminished kelp- stellers' food source- and eventually reclined their population. However, the lecturer rejects what is written in the passage and says that if an ecological disruption happened, it should also have decreased other animals' food sources and their population, but such things did not announce by sailors. Moreover, the lecturer if food shortage was the reason for the extinction of sea cows, whales' population should not grow as subtle as it should do.
Last, the author establishes the point that fur traders are possibly the ones how brought sea cows' population to extinction. It is likely that traders' hunting weapons and equipment could quickly kill several stealers simultaneously. The lecturer casts doubt on this theory and states that European fur traders arrived in Bering islands when sea cows' populations have already decreased drastically. Furthermore, the lecturer posits that what has actually brought this creature's population to zero was not fur traders because they have arrived at the end of the extinction process.
