TPO 31 - Integrated Writing Task
The main idea of both the passage and the talk is whether Sinosauropteryx was a feathered dinosaur or not. In the text, the author presents three reasons that Sinosauropteryx had not feather. The lecturer challenges all the arguments mentioned in the reading and believes none of this evidence is convincing.
Firstly, the author states that the fine lines were formed after the animal's death and these lines are the skin fiber. Conversely, the lecturer brings up the idea that several animal fossils were discovered in the same location but none of them had same lines. Additionally, she says that because Sinosauropteryx fossil were well preserved, it is obvious that the lines are feather.
Moreover, the author asserts that lines surrounding the skeleton are more likely to be fossilized remains of frills rather than remains of feathers. The lecturer, on the contrary, posits that composition of frills and feathers are different. In addition, she mentions that after the examination of remains researchers had found beta-keratin within fossils that are not in frills compositions.
Eventually, the reading passage hold the opinion that the location of lines are not the place that feathers usually are. On the other hand, the speaker points out that feather have been used by animals for various applications such as a mate attraction. For instance, peacocks use their colorful feathers in the mentioned situations. Furthermore, the evidence have revealed that Sinosauropteryx’s feathers were colorful too, orange and white. Thus, the location of lines in these animals' backs rather than common positions could not be a strong claim.
