Tpo55-preventing from desertification
The main idea of the reading and lecture is both about stand against desertification with some method. The author of the reading feels that setting device for collecting water from vapor in the air cannot be successful, and provide 3 reasons for that. The lecturer, on the other hand, utterly challenges this claims made by the author. He is of opinion that the author's reasons isn't convincing and provide three reason to elaborate that.
To begin with, the author argues that the cost of this device for each tree is so much, approximately 25$ for each tree. For getting good effects governments must apply this device for millions of tree, so they can afford it. This specific argument is challenged by lecturer. He claims that this device is reusable. After one tree grew, we can remove device and use for another tree. At this way, costs can be reasonable.
Secondly, the writer suggest that we can use local people to set this with their own money, but their economic situation is not good. They can't even cope with animal’s food costs. The lecturer, however, refute this by elaborating that this method has extra benefits for local people. He claims that they can use this device for other plants like vegetation’s. They can grow more food. Also, when trees got grew, they can use large Branch’s to set a fire wok.
Finally, the author of writing states that in this areas there is no rain sometimes even for six month, as a result when they trees grew enough, they need water to being alive. The lecture oppose with by bringing up that this young trees have long root, so their roots can reach to moist soil and provide their needed water from that. Consequently, they can grow without rain. For example, in Sahara desert some trees grew with this method and after two years that the device was removed, these tress are still healthy.
