Question: Summarise the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how they case doubt on specific points made in the reading passage.
Peary's North Pole expedition
The listening and the reading materials have a debate on the statement "if Peary really reached the North Pole". The penman puts forward 3 main hypothesis, which are refuted by the following orator.
First of all, the writer suggests that Natural Geographic Society 'committee has approved the accuracy of Peary's discovering. On the contrary, the speaker views this issue from an opposite angle. According to her, the member of this committee were Peary's friends and found his trip. Furthermore, they are not eligible for judging this travel.
The second point offered by the author is that similar program has down by a British explorer proof the above discovery because recent try has done in less days that 37 days makes Peary's travel possible. On the other hand, the professor casts doubt on this assumption by saying that these two trip are not comparable. Since Tom's food carried through airplane and air conditions was different for them, British 's trip may perform faster.
Last, the reading passage proposes that measuring the shadows' in Peary's photographs and evaluating them with sun condition at North Pole shows that these picture are real. However the lecturer holds a different view. She explains that the quality of picture has deteriorated during the time. As a result, these photos are not reliable for evaluating the shadow's highs. In addition, In Peary's time there were not exact measurable tools for determining precise dimensions's of shadows.
In all, the ideas mentioned in the speech counter the opinions in the text according above reasons.
