The reading passage discusses three ways to address the decline of Torreya. However, the speaker in the lecture casts doubt on the claims made in the article. She mentions that none of the solutions would be adequate.
First and foremost, the author contends that reintroducing Torreya in the northern parts where there is a cooler and wetter microclimate that favors its growth could help counter the dwindling in the population. Nevertheless, the lecturer brings up the fact that the temperature might have increased in this area due to global warming and the loss of wetlands. As a result, the reestablishment of the species would not be supported.
Secondly, the writer assumes that assisted migration to a furher north location could help Torreyea to survive. Conversely, the professor believes that assisted migration could have unpredicted outcomes such as killing other native species, which are also endangered. The lecturer elaborates that this actually happened when humans tried to utilize this method with the black locus.
Lastly, the excerpt posits that the seeds could be preserved in the research centers where scientists would ensure the survival of the species and also conduct further studies on the plant.
