The bar chart illustrates the percentage of single-child families in metropolis, suburbs and countryside of China from 1980 to 2000.
It is clear from the bar chart that all the proportions in three different areas decreased. Additionally, the figure of one-child families in 2000 was by far highest during the research period.
In 1980, the proportion in cities was highest, at 50%, while the figure for rural areas was significantly lower, at only 10%. In 1990, the percentage of single-child families in cities increased nearly twice as much as the figure in 1980. Then there was a significant fall in outskirts about 70% and reached the lowest point of 20% in the countryside.
In 2000, nearly 100% of one-child families were from cities, which was the highest figure during the period. By contrast, the percentage of China's on-child household went down dramatically to approximately 70% in rural areas.
