summarize the points made in the lecture about whales not navigation by the stars, being sure to
explain how they cast doubt on the specific points made in the reading about whales navigation by the stars.
The reading states that humpback whales may be navigating by the stars and provides three reasons for support. However, the professor explains that although the theory is fascinating, none of the reasons seems convincing and refutes each of the author's reasons.
First, the reading states that humpback whales seem to be intelligent enough to use stars to navigate by. The professor opposes this point by indicating that there is no connection between intelligence and navigation. Other animals such as birds and ducks use navigation by stars in spite of their low intelligence. He explains that it seems more an intrinsic ability which animals born with, therefore using intelligence as a sign for navigation by stars look unlikely.
second, the reading claims that humpback whales migrate in straight lines and as whales cannot rely on land features they rely on stars at night to navigate. However, the professor contends that animals who migrate in straight lines on land sense external objects and by this mean they could sense earth magnetic field. Scientists find biomagnetic in the body of humpback whales which make them sensitive to earth magnetic field. So, this shows that whales use earth magnetic field to orientation their way.
Third, the article avers that humpback whales exhibit an unusual behavior: they are sometimes observed floating straight up for minutes at a time, their heads above the water as though they were looking upward at the stars. The lecture refutes this point by mentioning that it is true that spy-hopping ability is rare among marine animals, but some sharks do this for hunting purpose not for migrating or looking to stars. Furthermore, there is evidence that demonstrates that whales do this spy-hopping during day when there is no star on sky. Hence, this reason is fully speculation.
