“It is grave mistake to theorize before one has data”
Data is the new oil of the world. One can have data with having information, but cannot have information without having data. It is evident that information is a processed data on which decision-making is based on. The prompt posit that it is a serious mistake to theorize before one has data. I strongly agree with this suggestion and I will argue that one has to have data, process it to obtain information, before making any decision.
First of all, data is germane and indispensable material that most organization need before taking any decision or action. For instance in the field of marketing, retailing and food vending , before a manager decides to operate in a giving region or location , it is prudent obtain data on the demographic (social status, financial status, religious affiliations, age distribution and sex) of that region and also the market trend(taking into consideration demand and supply of products) of that region. A company that do not take these factors into consideration before starting up a retail business in a particular location will inevitably fail at the end. For example operating restaurant that do not serve Halal food in predominantly muslim populated region is likely to run at loss due to low patronage from customers. But if this company have had data on the demographic of the potential customers they would haave probably considered adding halal food to their menu. From the above instances its patent that it’s a capital mistake to theorize before having data.
Second of all, in the field of governance of a country ,data is one the relevant factors that help governments in their planning and decision making. It is conspicuous that most developed countries realized the urgency to have data on a project before executing it. This is why most developed nations have a well-resourced national statistical organizations whose sole purpose is to collect demographic information on it citizens. For instance in the case of china, before implementing its one child per couple policy it had data on the age distribution , sex distribution and fertility rate of it citizens which made them project that they might have issue with overpopulation in years to come. However after 2015 , the government realized that its countries fertility rate was low, high aged population with few young people which resulted from tsunamis and major disease outbreaks. This led to the abolition of the one child policy , allowing couples to have two children. From the above instances it cogent that indeed data is a must have, before any decision is taking.
Thirdly, in many major fields of studies such astronomy, economics and oil exploration data is the lifeline on which most studies depends (oxygen support system). In the field of oil exploration seismic reflection survey, magnetic surveys have to conducted over a period of time to help geophysicist gather data on the location of the hydrocarbon and determine whether its exploration will economically viable. Without this processed data it is imprudent to conduct such a cost intensive project. In addition before governments also needs data to implement its economic policies, for a government to increase it tax collection base , data is needed of the number of actively employed citizens, their range of take home salaries and those who are privately employed. It is patent that without these data most government won’t be able to accurately implement its economic policies, and if it goes ahead to implement its tax policies with now data to back it might inadvertently hurt business and citizen who are low income earners. This might also lead to unrest in the country, like that of the protest of the yellow vest movement in France (2018) a protest movement for economic justice on taxes on their wealth. This led to almost 4000 people (both police and the protestors) sustaining injuries. From the above instances, it’s clear that it’s a grave blunder to theorize before data.
One may argue that some people do take decisions based on their instinct without data ,which turns out to work for them. However, such instances are few in this modern and complex world where every decision we make is based on data. Also due to the inherent risk in every decision we make, which is unavoidable, but can be mitigated through the reliance on data for decision-making. Hence, it will be a serious and deadly mistake to theorize without data,
