Jane Austen (1775-1817) is one of the most famous of all English novelists, and today her novels are more popular than ever, with several recently adapted as Hollywood movies. But we do not have many records of what she looked like. For a long time, the only accepted image of Austen was an amateur sketch of an adult Austen made by her sister Cassandra. However recently a professionally painted, full-length portrait of a teenage girl owned by a member of the Austen family has come up for sale. Although the professional painting is not titled Jane Austen, there are good reasons to believe she is the subject.
First, in 1882, several decades after Austen's death, Austen's family gave permission to use the portrait as an illustration in an edition of her letters. Austen's family clearly recognized it as a portrait of the author. So, for over a century now, the Austen family itself has endorsed the claim that the girl in the portrait is Jane Austen.
Second, the face in the portrait clearly resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch, which we know depicts Austen. Though somewhat amateurish, the sketch communicates definite details about Austen's face. Even though the Cassandra sketch is of an adult Jane Austen, the features are still similar to those of the teenage girl in the painting. The eyebrows, nose, mouth, and overall shape of the face are very much like those in the full-length portrait.
Third, although the painting is unsigned and undated, there is evidence that it was painted when Austen was a teenager. The style links it to Ozias Humphrey, a society portrait painter who was the kind of professional the wealthy Austen family would hire. Humphrey was active in the late 1780s and early 1790s, exactly the period when Jane Austen was the age of the girl in the painting.
Recently, there has been a ton of debate as to that a new full-length portrait of a teenage girl is Jane Austen. More specifically, in regard to the passages, the writer puts forth the idea that there are several good reasons to believe this teenage girl in the portrait is Jane Austen. In the listening passage, the lecturer is quick to point out there are serious flaws in the writer's claims. In fact, the lecturer believes there is not at all convincing evidence to prove this idea, and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the reading text.
First and foremost, the author of the reading text states that Austen's family confirmed that the teenage girl in the portrait is Jane. Some professionals in the same field, however, stand firm in opposition to this claim. In the listening, the lecturer believes that by the time that family confirmed the validity of the portrait, Jane Austen had died for almost 70 years. So they had never seen her recognize her in teenage age.
Second, the author of the reading thinks that the face of the portrait resembles the one in Cassandra's sketch which is the only picture of Austen. Although, the sketch is of an adult Jane Austen there are lots of similarities between the girl in the portrait and the sketch. On the other hand, the lecturer believes that this portrait can belong to one of her relatives. Most of Austen's relatives were teenagers or have children at that age so they can be the subject of the portrait.
Finally, the author wraps his argument bt positing that the style of painting links to the Ozias Humphery, which was a professional portrait painter at that time and worked for Austen's family. Not surprisingly, the lecturer takes issue with this claim by contending that the style of the portrait belong to a later date when Austen was 27 years old and older than the girl in the portrait.
To sum up, obviously, the lecturer and the author hold conflicting views about this portrait. It's clear that they will have trouble finding common ground on this issue.
