Smart car
Both the passage and lecture discuss driverless cars, a very exciting yet controversial topic. Based on the reading arguments, non-driver cars may have several benefits compared to conventional ones, which primarily include higher levels of driving safety, lesser amount of exhaust fumes, and saving time while driving. However, the lecturer stated some of the weaknesses of such smart vehicles that cast serious doubts about its apparently undeniable benefits.
First of all, the safety issue of current cars is not completely relieved by computer driven automobiles. Since computer programs are produced by human programmers, no software is absolutely perfect and error-proof. Thus, inevitable software errors may lead to even larger catastrophes. For example, the car mentioned in the reading had recently had a head-on crash, after a 700,000 miles of non-accident drive. This showed that artificial intelligence cannot be reliable, as it is claimed by the passage.
Moreover, the lecturer mentioned that a driverless car could be used by any person with any level of driving skills. As a matter of fact, having no age restriction on obtaining the permission to ride a car will result in an increased number of cars on the roads. Because of that, the overall amount of air pollution by cars will eventually elevate. Therefore, any reduction in air pollution due to smoothly proceeding traffic of driverless cars, which is claimed by the reading, will be annulled.
At the end, it is brought to attention by the lecturer that driving is a legitimate excuse for being off the stressful chores of a full work day. By having a smart car at service, people find extra time to become more involved in their responsibilities and job affairs than now. So, the time saved by the driverless car will not be a relaxing advantage anymore. This undermines the passage argument that states that smart cars help people to benefit from their relaxing non-driving time on their vehicles.
