The diagrams below show how houses can be protected in areas
which are prone to flooding.
The given diagram details the safety measures which are taken while constructing houses in the flood-prone areas
Looking from the overall perspective, it is readily apparent that the construction basics vary depending on the presence of a stopbank near the housing area.
According to the given illustration, to begin with, the area with a stopbank, which is constructed slightly higher than the 100-year flood level marking( up by a freeboard height-300mm), has a floodgate to stop the entrance of the river water in the locality and to drain out the collected rainwater back into the river. Moreover, the houses are raised above from the ground level to a height equivalent to the freeboard level so as to protect flooding from the internal ponding caused by the rainwater via internal runoff.
By contrast, the housing locality without any stopbank has a slightly different construction mechanism. Although the building is raised in a similar way as it is done in the area with the stopbank to safeguard the locality from the floodwater, however, the internal flooding is directed to flow back into the river directly.
