Should recreational marijuana use be legalized? Pros and cons of legalising marijuana.
The issue of legalizing recreational marijuana use has been tackled for quite a time. Despite the fact that the drug is illegal, a cohort of people have tried it or have been using it on a regular basis. Is there any sense of prohibiting it at all? Opponents of legalization believe there is. They contend that marijuana use harms the user physically and mentally and should be strongly discouraged. Proponents provide a huge list of advantages among which is economic growth, decrease of street crime and safer use.
Some people believe that legalizing marijuana can boost the economy, first of all, by creating thousands of jobs and, secondly, by collecting in tax revenues. Such industries as tourism, banking, construction, real estate and a great deal of others will benefit from legal marijuana.
However, other people argue that societal steep costs of marijuana outweigh its tax revenues. For instance, paying for increased emergency room visits, medical care, addiction treatment, adverse impact on health from secondhand smoke far exceeds revenues legal drug raises. These people are of the opinion that marijuana generally hurts society.
To sum up, people who support legalization believe it will add billions to the economy while others stick to the idea that legalization will lead to more medical emergencies, hospital visits and treatment on the taxpayers' expense.
Legalization of marijuana seems more beneficial to me and the arguments are more convincing. I personally believe that it will not only give a push to economic development but also take money away from drug cartels, organized crime, and street gangs. Moreover, there is scientific evidence that marijuana doesn't cause addiction or lung illnesses unlike tobacco and alcohol.
