Like many creatures, humpback whales migrate long distances for feeding and mating purposes. How animals manage to migrate long distances is often puzzling. In the case of humpback whales, we may have found the answer: they may be navigating by the stars, much as early human sailors did. What we know about humpback whales makes this a distinct possibility.
Both the author of the article and the lecturer statements revolves around whether the humpback whales using the starts for navigation through their migration or not. Regarding the passage the author profoundly believes there are three plausible hypothesis which all together attests that these spieces use stars for navigation. However, the professor calls all the mentioned claims into question since they lack enough evidence to be considered credible. In fact the professor believes these factors are not connected to this hypothesis and addresses, in detail, the trouble with each point made in the essay.
First and foremost, the author of the reading states that humpbaks whales are intelligent enough to navigate by using the stars. In addition the text claims that these whales are highly developed in cognitive abilites which provides them a complex sensory system to oriente using the night sky. the professor repudiates this fallacious belief by refering to more strong evidence. accordding to the lecturer, other animals, like birds and ducks, use the night sky to navigate, while their brain is not highly intelligence;there by, these two elements are not connected. So this assumption is excluded and it is not convincing that humpback whales orientation has something to do with their intelligence.
Another hypothesis, presnted by the essayist, hold the idea that while this kind of whales go in the straight direction for a long time, not using the landmarks of deep open ocean, the definitly rely on the starts to find their destination.Nevertheless, the orator explicitly addresses this point when she states that the humpback whales have a mineral in their body called Biomagnetite. She ellaborates on this by bringing up the point that the animals having this chemical in their body, use earth's magnetic field to navigate. Thus the secoud claim is also ruled out as the result of stronger fact which is offered by the professor.
Finally, the author bring his arguments to a close by suggesting that whales use Spy-hopping, which is a rare action in animals, in order to look at the skys, While he actually ignores one important fact. Many other marine animals like sharks, do spy-hopping, while they do not even migrate. No surprisingly, the takes issue by this claim by contending that these animals use this action to not only avoid preditors ut also to hunt.He notes that the most important evidence that stresses on this claim is that the whales do the spy-hopping during the day, when there is no satr in the sky.Consequently, this hypothesis is also based on wrong reasoning.
