Summarize the points made in the lecture, being sure to explain how the opposes specific points made in the reading passage.
Altruism is a type of behavior in witch an individual sacrifices its own interests for another individual or group of individuals. This kind of behaviour is often studied in animals, but it can also be seen in humans.
Frequently cited example od altruistic behavior is the specific behavior of meerkats. In every group of meerkats there are one individual that act like a guard. This meerkat is looking out for predatores while the other meerkats are feading and signals the others if they are in danger. By behaving this way, this particular meerkat puts his life in great danger and all for the sake of others. However, recent studies have shown that guardian meerkat is not in that great of a danger. First of all, these studies have showen that sentinel meerkat ate before taking his position as a watcher. This means that although this meerkat is not eating at the same time as others, he is not starving. Secondly, these studies have also showed that guardian meerkat is usually watching over his group by the burrows. This means that after he sees the danger and alarms others he can rather quickly escape and take a shalter. On the other hand, alarmed meerkats are more likely to behave chaoticaly witch can attract the predator.
As I mention before, we can see examples of altruistic behavior in humans too. Great example are organ donors. At the first look we can all agree that giving up your organe so someone else could have it is complitely unselfish act. But after closer examination we can see that the donor gets something from this transaction too. After the transplantation donor gets great deal of respect not only from the recipient, but from the public as well. If we see this like some sort of reward can we honestly say that this was the example of altruistic behavior?
