Literature
The reading and the lecture are both about the decline in the number of people reading literature. Whereas the author of the passage states that young people read less literature and this has unfortunate effects, the lecturer suggests that not reading literature doesn’t mean people are not doing anything productive. The speaker casts doubt on the main points made in the reading by providing three reasons.
First of all, the text states that nothing apart from literature provides intellectual stimulation. However, the lecturer disputes this point by saying that in today’s world culture has changed in terms of how people can obtain intellectual stimulation from other sources such as science, math, and history books. Furthermore, he mentions that these books can help to exercise people’s imagination and they benefit as much as they would from literature.
Secondly, the reading states that people are wasting time reading poorly written books and that many people prefer to watch TV instead of reading something valuable. Nevertheless, the lecturer refutes this argument by saying that there is a lot of valuable information on TV, also brilliant songs that can contribute the same value as literature. Besides, less time reading doesn't mean the population’s knowledge is declining since some programs on TV or music aren’t a waste of time.
Finally, the reading claims that there are many talented writers today, but a lack of audience. In contrast, the lecturer believes that many writers today are hard to understand, for this reason, people prefer doing activities that can provide the same as literature but are easy to understand.
In conclusion, although the reading and the audio are both about people reading less literature, the three main points in the reading are effectively challenged by the lecturer.
