nutrias
The author in the text passage suggests three methods to control the population of nutrias, a rodent-like pest that harms the environment. He includes methods such as building metal walls and fences, drying up the drainage, and consuming nutria meat. The lecturer, however, finds serious flaws in the writer's claims.
Firstly, the author claims that building metal walls and fences will prevent the nutrias from damaging property. However, the speaker explains that nutrias are notorious for their sharp-clawed feet, and will dig deep underground and make their way into farms and gardens regardless of how deep they are constructed. This directly contradicts the claims made by the writer in the text passage.
Further, the passage proposes a plan to dry up drainage systems to prevent nutrias from inhabiting low-lying lands. Again, the author is quick to point out that this is measure is far too drastic to control the nutria population. Drying up drainage may, in fact, actually have a negative impact on crop production. As a result, people's livelihoods will be affected. This defeats the purpose of curbing the nutria population and refutes the statements made by the author.
Finally, the writer posits that consuming nutrias for their tasty, nutrient-dense meat will be an effective measure to get rid of them. Unsurprisingly, the lecture takes issue with this by contending that nutrias are hosts to several bacteria that may cause conditions such as Tuberculosis, Septicemia, and Tularemia. Such pathogens are harmful to humans on consumption and can cause rashes, fever, and weight loss. Hence, eating the meat of these rats may prove to do more harm than good, according to the professor.
To sum up, the speaker and author have contradicting opinions on how to control the population of the rats. Metal walls and fences will be rendered ineffective, drying up drainage will harm crop production, and eating nutria meat will post health threats to the consumers.
