Both reading and lecture are about possible contributing factors to 200 million years ago mass-extinction allowing dinosaurs turns to dominant species at the end of the Triassic period. However, the lecture finds all the idea implausible and present some evidence to refute them.
First, the author argues that decrease sea level has a negative impact on the species that resided in coastal and shallow ocean space by destroying them and make a disturbance in the food chain globally. On the contrary, the professor highlighted the fact that habitats of coastal areas had adaption strategies in order to offset the fluctuation level of water which happened gradually. Indeed, the annihilation of these species could be considered as sudden phenomenon rather than a gradual declination that takes millions of years.
Secondly, the reading holds the view that there is a reverse correlation between the concentration of sulfur dioxide in the atmosphere which releases from volcanic activity and the temperature of the earth leading to the annihilation of species. In contrast, the lectures dismiss the point of view to the fact that dwindle in atmospheric temperature due to So2 occurs in a relatively short time. However, volcanic activity and sulfur dioxide still present in the atmosphere. Moreover, the excessive amount of SO2 remove from the atmosphere by making a combination of water and fall back as rain.
Finally, the passage asserts that asteroids collided with earth releasing huge amounts of soil and crushed rock onto the atmosphere. These asteroidal remnants prohibit sunlight from reaching the earth for long period and gave rise to the devastation of plants and animals consequently. Conversely, the speaker brings up the fact that there is no site were located that could attribute to this collision. In addition, the founded location of other asteroids has been dated 12 million years before the mass extinction.
