smart cars
The lecturer talks about various aspects of the smart cars that challenge the advantages mentioned in the passage.
Firstly, it is not decisively clear if the smart cars can perform as good as they are expected to. There is enough evidence that the technology can fail sometimes. And when the technology in a smart car fails, the consequences can be costlier as compared to that of a conventional car. Since smart cars will be closed packed in a city, breakdown of even one car can lead to pileing up of a large number of cars in the vicinity.Furthermore, there is no evidence suggesting less drivers will be injured in the case of smart cars. This scenario contradicts the passage that states there will be a decrease in the number of accidents when smart cars are used.
Secondly, history has shown that every time a new convenience has been introduced into a car, more people are likely to use cars. In a similar manner, with introduction of smart cars, there will be more people diriving on the road which will eventually lead to traffic congestion. This observation implies that the traffic issues will not recede as predicted in the passage.
Finally, contrary to the reduction in the maintainence cost of a smart car as stated in the passage, the techonologies used in a smart car like the GPS, sensors, etc will be of high cost. The cost for reparing advanced technology will be more than the offsetted cost, thus increasing the maintainence cost overall.
