challenges of travelling to mars and its solutions
The passage discusses the problems of travelling to Mars and claims that it is much complicated than travelling to the Moon that it may be impossible because of several reasons. The lecture provides solutions to the problems that passage discussed and claims that travelling to Mars is more challenging but it is not impossible.
First challenge of a trip to Mars according to the passage is that it is a 2 years trip and it is much longer than Moon trip. Therefore, providing the required amount of supplementary for the astronauts such as food, air and water would be impossible. The lecture provide solution for this matter based on a technique to grow plants in water. This technique can provide food for astronauts also it takes a little space, recycles waste water and produces fresh air for them.
Second problem according to the passage, is spending a long time in zero gravity. The passages states that this can affects the passengers body negatively and can decrease their muscles mass and lower their bones density. The lecture doesn't think as zero gravity as a big challenge because there are many spaceships that are orbiting around the earth for a long time with people living in them. In addition, there are several techniques that can be used to prevent these negative effects, such as regular exercise and using vitamins and calcium pills.
Final problem according to the passage is space radiations. The passage states that astronauts in Mars mission would be exposed to dangerous space radiations from the sun. In addition, this is impossible to shield the whole spaceship because this shield would add a lot of extra weight. The lecture states that sun radiations are not always that dangerous and they are occasionally dangerous. So the lecture provides a solution by using a special instrument that detect the dangerous radiations and warns the astronauts. When astronauts hear the warning they can go under a small shield that protect them till the end of dangerous radiations. Therefore, this solution also helps the need of a big shield for whole spaceship.
