Try to explain how the old man comes to accept the inevitability of Alice s marrying

Essay topics:

Try to explain how the old man comes to accept the inevitability of Alice's marrying.

In the second half of the 20th century, Doris Lessing was well-known as a fiction writer with her “scepticism, fire and visionary power” (described by the Swedish Academic). In 1957, she published a short stories collection entitled “The Habit of Loving”, including “Flight” - the short story about an old man’s grief and acceptance toward his granddaughter’s maturity. As many grandparents do, he behaves as it is hard to accept his grandchild’s marriage at first; nevertheless, growing up is an inevitable story in one’s life, he finally releases her, letting her fly away with her own independent life later.

At first, the old man does not expect his grandchild’s maturity and marriage at all. His confrontational stance expressed through his speech toward Alice: “Think you want to leave home, hey? Think you can go running around the fields at night?” or “I'll tell your mother!”. The speech is a bit bitter, showing his anger and disappointment. It seems that he hates how Alice enjoys her date when running out of the garden with the postmaster’s son. However, as readers, people know that this childish jealousy is caused by his endless love toward Alice, and the way he stands alone looking after Alice “But I never meant...' he muttered, waiting for her to turn and run to him. 'I didn't mean…” The old man also opposes Alice’s marriage while talking with Alice’s mother, Lucy: “Why do you make your girls marry? It's you who do it. What do you do it for? Why?”. As Alice’s sisters, she has to leave home and get married, even Lucy - the old man’s daughter does. By saying that, the author wants to express that growing up and settling into a domestic routine is an inevitable part of our lives. As Lucy emphasizes “She's eighteen. Eighteen!”, the age that Alice can decide to do whatever she wants.

Knowing that Alice will get married next month, the old man shows his sadness, lonely taking his steps to the veranda with “his eyes stung”, “wet spread down over his chin and he took out a handkerchief and mopped his whole face. The garden was empty.” He no longer shouts to Alice or gets mad with Lucy, he sits alone and busy thinking about his life being left “uncherished”. When Alice and Steven give him a new pigeon and wordlessly encourage him that nothing would be changed through their “lying happy eyes”. At that time, the old man can feel that he has received some compensation for the loss of his grandfather, that he releases his favorite pigeon. In the late afternoon, they all look up to the sky and watch these birds spread their wings, until the space is silent and the sky is empty. When he accepts to open the cage for his favorite homing pigeon to fly, he knows that he has to set Alice free. After all, his grandchild's maturity is inevitable, it is the rule and people have to follow.

To sum up, “Flight” by Doris Lessing is a story about family, where people are always seen as little kids, but they have to end up growing up and will be on their own. Despite the fact that maturity is a fierce challenge for all young people, and hard to accept for the old ones, they have to face it sooner or later. This piece of story is not just Alice’s, everyone can relate and empathize with their beloved parents, grandparents more and more.
