The reading and the listening both discuss tuna farming. The passage criticizes cultivating these species in ocean cages by stating three problems of this method. The professor, however, claims that researchers have come up with solutions to tackle these issues.
First, the author argues that when capturing, female tuna do not lay eggs. For this, tuna farmers need to catch a great number of young fish to supply their farms and to compensate for those fish that they have sold; this causes a reduction in the wild tuna population. The lecturer, on the other hand, claims that tuna farmers do not need to stock their farms by captivating more young fish anymore, since scientists have vaccinated female tuna with a harmless hormone by which they lay eggs in cages. Therefore, there is no reason for overfishing young wild tuna.
Second, according to the passage, cultivating tuna fish in this way is expensive, since these species feed on smaller fish, and they need large quantities of these fish to get enough nutrition. Thus, tuna farms may become unprofitable in the near future. Nonetheless, the professor states that true, tuna fish have a costly, high protein diet, but they do not have to consume smaller fish to gain the appropriate amount of nutrition. Tuna farmers can grow a kind of plant which has the same amount of protein so that tuna fish consume those instead of smaller fish. Cultivating these plants reduces tuna farmer's expenses.
Third, the passage goes on illustrating an example of a tuna farm in southern Australia where tuna fish captivated in ocean cages were infected with blood flukes, a type of parasite that eventually cause death to the infected species, to demonstrate that fish in these farms are more prone to become ill. Nevertheless, the professor addresses this issue by referring to the same example of the tuna farm in Australia that the infection was eliminated when the tuna farm was transferred to deeper waters when it was unraveled that these parasites do not survive in higher depths of water, As a result, parasite infections will not be a problem if the tuna farmers locate their farms farther offshore.
All in all, the reading provides three problems of nurturing tuna fish in ocean cages, but the lecture says that researchers have found solutions for all of them.
