Coffee and its processing
The given diagram depicts the physical structure of the coffee beans and the steps involved in processing them. A typical coffee bean consists of three main parts: covering, pulp and seeds.
The outermost layer is called the covering. It protects the seed from the harsh climate of its surroundings. It is followed by the pulp which is a slimy substance enclosing the seeds. Processing is a procedure administered to extract these seeds from the beans.
The process of removing these seeds begins with pulping. The seeds are fed into a pulping machine which methodically removes the outer covering and the pulp. Then, the output of this machine is left to sit alone in a tank for a specific period of time. This is called fermentation.
Furthermore, the seeds are washed thoroughly to get rid of excess pulp. Finally, the seeds are required to dry either with the help of sun or other mechanical instruments to obtain fresh and healthy coffee beans.
