Some school leavers travel or work for a period of time instead of going directly to university. What are the advantages or disadvantages?
In this day and age, students graduating from high schools are falling in step with the trend toward taking a gap year before attending colleges. Although such a trend could benefit pupils in manifold aspects, the demerits of it should not be overlooked.
On the one hand, it is indubitable that a sabbatical leave may become a major asset to the person later on. First and foremost, this period is a break from intensive academic courses hence reviving both mental and physical health of an alumnus. For instance, research on gap years has specified figures which indicate that most school leavers upon their returns take their schoolwork much more seriously. Second, this period also assists students in terms of orientation which is indeed of greater significance than academic records and vice versa. As a matter of course, orientation which is favorable for job satisfaction is crucial to one’s life regarding both financial and mental facets; however, it tends to be underestimated by most undergraduates.
On the other hand, a sabbatical leave may bear several potential risks which are detrimental to a student’s learning process. Most noticeably, taking a year off will inevitably cause a disruption to academic continuity meaning ineffectiveness in knowledge acquisition afterwards. This might lead to low grades which most employers in this era still base on to assess one’s competence. Furthermore, this trend could discourage pupils from returning to the academic environment, and alternatively, induce them to land a financially appealing job regardless of their promotion prospects. As a consequence, job stability of those dropouts is usually not assured, afterwards, were they to regret the current work position, they would stand little chance of being admitted to other institutions for their lack of qualifications.
All things considered, granting that taking a gap year might sound appealing in terms of revival and orientation, its probable risks regarding academic discontinuity and promotion prospects should also be observed.
