The reading passage states that the large bony crests on top of Lambeosaurs' heads might have been certain functions and provides three theories to support the idea. The professor, however, casts doubt on each theory proposed by the reading and says that there are no clear and real functions for the bony crests.
First, the author mentions that the crests improve the dinosaurs' sense of smell because of their similarity to the nose bones of modern animals. On the other hand, the lecturer refutes this argument and claims that it is not supported by their brains because of a lack of well-develop nerves. The nerves detect the smell and Lambeosaurs brain cavity is too small to support this complicated brain. As a result, it does not seem the crests could improve the sense of smell.
Second, the article asserts that the crests prevented overheating by lowering Lambeosaurs' body temperature like Stegosaurs. On the contrary, the listening material repudiates this theory and explains that Stegosaurs had lots of bony crests plates on their bodies, helping them lower their body temperature. In contrast, Lambeosaurs just had one small crests on their head. So they could not benefit from this like Stegosaurs.
Third, the reading avers that Lambeosaurs used the crests to make sounds for communication because they had a good sense of hearing. Conversely, the professor contends that all Lambeosaurs had the crests, but not all of them had a sense of hearing. The scientists just have funded one Lambeosaur having a sense of hearing. As a result, due to the lack of evidence, scientists should be skeptical about this theory.
