One reason for believing that dinosaurs were endotherms is that dinosaur fossils have been discovered in Polar Regions. Only animals that can maintain a temperature well above that of the surrounding environment could be active in such cold climates.
Leg position and movement
There is a connection between endotherm and the position and movement of the legs. The physiology of endotherm allows sustained physical activity, such as running. But running is efficient only if an animal's legs are positioned underneath its body, not at the body's side, as they are too crocodiles and many lizards. The legs of all modern endotherms are underneath the body, and so were the legs of dinosaurs. This strongly suggests that dinosaurs were endotherms.
Haversian canals
There is also a connection between endotherm and bone structure. The bones of endotherms usually include structures called Haversian canals. These canals house nerves and blood vessels that allow the living animal to grow quickly and rapid body growth is in fact a characteristic of endotherm. The presence of Haversian canals in bone is a strong indicator that the animal is an endotherm, and fossilized bones of dinosaurs are usually dense with Haversian canals.
In this set of materials, the writer strongly postulates that the dinosaurs are endotherms and provides three theories to endorse its idea. On the other hand, the professor states that dinosaurs are not true endotherms and denies each of the theories mentioned in the passage.
First and foremost, the passage begins by asserting that fossils have been found in the polar region and the animals who can maintain their body temperature above the temperature in the polar region can survive. However, the professor explains that in the months of winters dinosaurs migrated from that region and shifted to the area with suitable temperatures.
Moreover, the professor in the lecture highlights that having legs underneath the body is not a sign of a high-energy animal. Dinosaurs have legs underneath the body to carry their large weight which has many advantages. These claims refute the writer's implication that there is a relation between being endotherm and legs position and movement.
Ultimately, the article wraps its arguments by explaining that because there are hervesian canals in the fossilized bones of dinosaurs required for quick growth so dinosaurs are endotherms. However, the speaker in the listening refutes this point by showing the inaccuracy of the writer that dinosaurs do have growth rings which are required for thickening of the bones, which helps in their fast growth but dinosaurs showed a pattern of growth where they showed rapid growth in warm-season then slow or no growth in cooler seasons and then again rapid growth in a favorable season. While the true endotherm have rapidly growth in every season, which shows the dinosaurs are not the endotherms.
