The graph shows the amount of fossil fuel energy generated in Europe between 1981 and 2001
The line graph illustrates the generated amount of three distinct energy types, including petroleum, coal and natural gas from 1981 to 2001 in Europe. Overall, it is apparent that petroleum and natural gas had the opposite trend as coal in this period.
Looking at the details, natural gas had the lowest starting point, under 10 trillion units in 1981, which was one-third the amount of two other types at the same time. Then it experienced a rapid growth to reach the peak at over 30 trillion units in 2001, which tripled the first figure recorded. Saw a similar trend as natural gas, although had remained stable between 1986 and 1991, petroleum still stood at the highest place among three types of energy, from around 35 trillion units in 1981 to 50 trillion units in 2001.
In contrast, coal was the only type of energy in Europe which witnessed a decline tendency. It started with 30 trillion units in 1981, which could be considered to compete with petroleum to take the first place. Then coal’s figure dropped dramatically in the next 20 years, to hit the bottom in 2001 with nearly 20 trillion units, which lower than natural gas’s statistics at the same time.
