About a project that uses a device to grow more tress, in order to prevent desertification.
The reading states that to stop desertification, the dismissal of the importance of certain projects that helps the trees to grow more quickly, should not be carried, and stated three reasons. The professor disagrees that the reasons for rejecting are not convincing. First of all, the passage explains that in the process of growing many trees, the device cost will be expensive for the entire cost. However, the professor points out that when trees get bigger, the device will be removed. In other words, the device can be reused, thus reducing the cost. Secondly, the author of the reading passage claims that to fight desertification, local people have to participate in the process and their work will be harsh. However, the professor contradicts that being part of the process will benefit local people. They can use the device for other plants and as the tree gets larger, they can use the branches for firewood. Finally, in contrast to the reading passage's point that the tree will not survive because of the device's poor water collection, the professor explains that the tree can survive. Because by growing bigger, the trees will grow long roots and gain moisture from soil underground. He supports this by taking an example of the Sahara desert, which survived a harsh environment after the device was removed.
