Essay topics:

Some people suggest that social networking and online communication have increased social isolation. To what extent do you agree? Give reasons for your answers and include relevant examples.

It is true that to some extent social networking and online communication adversely affect social behaviour of human. While I agree that sometimes it has negative impact on us, I believe that virtual interactions have enabled us to diverse our social relationships

To begin with, people are benefited from online communication by gaining more connections. Before, people often form and maintain their social relationships through offline means like meeting up or interact in person. With the emergence of social media and online platforms, borders between human and human have been erased such that people begin to adopt a new way to broaden their circle. For example, instead of going out or setting up a date to meet directly in person, people can now hold up an online meeting in just a minute by utilising email, video conferencing or instant messaging. In addition, networking is easier to achieve than ever before, with the help of Facebook, Instagram or Tiktok, one seller or businessman in Asia could find a buyer in Europe or two friends in far apart countries could get to know each other in just a click.

On the contrary, extensive online socialising could lead to the missing of physical contact which is the one of the main reasons for social isolation. Interacting directly with a person helps human develop emotionally by providing them non-verbal cues such as face expression and body gestures. People spending their time online all the time may find themselves less friendly or sociable. Take the example of employees working from home during Covid shutdown. After a long period of communicating online, colleagues under the same team found themselves acting awkwardly and less bonding with each other.

To sum up, online communicating and social networking have mixed effect on human behaviour

For these reasons, although social isolation becomes worse under the impact of online communicating, it does not always hold true
