Some think that sending people to an asteroid would actually be the best colonization option for a number of reasons.
The reading passage and the lecture talk about the idea of asteroid colonization. Despite that, the professor states that the idea is not practical as it does not consider its disadvantages. He casts doubt on every single point the reading makes. In the lecture, he uses specific details to support his idea.
To begin with, the reading passage mentions that asteroids have lower gravity than planets because of their size. However, the speaker indicates low gravity presents other risks. The low gravity will result in muscle and bone density issues that as hurt human health. Therefore, the professor can not give a nod to the author in terms of the first point.
Secondly, about the mining of valuable metals, the author claims that the precious metal would bring wealth to an asteroid colony whereas the lecturer holds the view that the cost of transportation should be considered. Plus, the supply of metals may also change the price which causes the business not profitable as expected. Apparently, the professor's argument disproves its counterpart in the reading.
In addition, the reading passage suggests that some of the asteroids would be easy to reach. The professor, on the other hand, argues that easy to reach does not mean easy to return. Some asteroids may move away from Earth's orbit and it will be a great distance to travel in the end.
In conclusion, the author and the speaker hold conflicting views on this topic. It is clear that they will have problems finding common ground on this issue.
