The diagram below shows how salt is removed from seawater to make it drinkable. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The image illustrates the process of creating drinkable water from seawater by salt removal.
The process has four main steps, beginning with the pretreatment stage and ending with the storage stage.
In the first step, the seawater intake will undergo the pretreatment stage. After the first filtration, the unnecessary substance, known as filter backwash, will be returned to the sea while the processed water will resume with the next step. Following the previous step, the treated water will pass through the membrane with high pressure. Moreover, only water molecules are allowed to continue with the following step. However, impurities and salt, known as seawater concentrate, will be removed from the treated water before being sent back to the sea.
Subsequently, the processed water will enter the second treatment stage, where it will be post-treated with lime chlorine and fluoride. After the second treatment, the last step is to store the treated water to integrate the water supply system.
