Olive trees
The reading and the lecture are about the most effective methods to protect olive trees from a disease called quick decline syndrome. While the author of the article argues that there are three widely considered methods to be most effective to protect olive trees, the lecturer disputes that. His position is that each method has a drawback that will limit the overall efficacy of it.
According to the reading, the article mentions that early detection of the bacteria is critical to prevent the spread of the disease. Therefore, farmers should regularly look for signs of the disease. This method is challenged by the lecturer. He claims that regular inspection is a time consuming method. Additionally, he points out that most of the time there will be no visual symptoms at the earlystage of this disease.
Secondly, the author suggests that promotion the overallhealthof olive trees is an effective strategy to prevent the spread of the disease. The author notes that trees in a good health are more likely to resist the infection. However, the lecturer asserts that it is not a perfect way to protect olive trees. He goes on to sy that promotion the overall health is not going to guarantee that trees are going to stay healthy. In addition to that, he says that it is an expensive strategy for farmers.
Finally, the author says that reducing the population of the insect that transmit the disease is crucial in controlling the spread of it. The author contends that spraying chemical insecticides is the most effective method for farmers to control insects population. In contrast, the lecturer states that this method is hard to be done probably. He says that many insectsadapt those chemicals, and become resistant to them.
