Schools are spending more time teaching traditional subjects such as history. Some people think they should rather spend more time in teaching skills that can help students find a job. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The comparison between time learning academic subjects and time learning practical skills has been a controversial topic. Some people express that they want schools to prioritize training students skills that are applicable for their future career. From my perspective, I absolutely agree that curriculum should focus more on job-related skills.

First of all, teaching practical skills is an effective use of students' time as it increases the employability for students in future. A study from a university from Canada demonstrates that people who have undergone vocational training perform 70% better than the rest. It is apparent that pragmatic abilities are much more useful than theoretical subjects in solving work. Additionally, newly-graduated students will have less challenge in adapting to working space as well as perform job duties satisfactorily with little supervision and soonly catch up with their colleagues.

Secondly, traditional subjects probably do not benefit students in job-seeking process. For instance, once students enroll in a natural science class, they are taught about countless theorems and do numerous exercises. However, there should be more experiments and scientific research instruction in the curriculum which actually improve observing, analyzing, and reporting skills. Regarding social science subjects, especially history, besides giving historical information, teachers should give youngsters a chance to debate, to think of what would happen if we chose the alternatives solutions of a random event, which can develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. As a result of a fully–skill training, students will feel certain and secure about what they are going to do in the future career.

In conclusion, I totally agree that schools ought to spend more time teaching vocational knowledge as practical skills are useful in job search and working.
