The following is taken from a memo from the advertising director of the Super Screen Movie Production Company.
“According to a recent report from our marketing department, during the past year, fewer people attended Super Screen-produced movies than in any other year. And yet the percentage of positive reviews by movie reviewers about specific Super Screen movies actually increased during the past year. Clearly, the contents of these reviews are not reaching enough of our prospective viewers. Thus, the problem lies not with the quality of our movies but with the public’s lack of awareness that movies of good quality are available. Super Screen should therefore allocate a greater share of its budget next year to reaching the public through advertising.”
Write a response in which you discuss what questions would need to be answered in order to decide whether the recommendation and the argument on which it is based are reasonable. Be sure to explain how the answers to these questions would help to evaluate the recommendation.
Movies, part of the entertaining stage like theater, concert etc...as each type of entertaining, movies range from different styles and tastes. One might like actions movies while another loves drama. As each style usually is attributed to one producing company, Hollywood for the action, French cinema more for the drama etc...In this memo, the advertising director of this production company is coming up with the idea to spend more money to advertise his movies. At first his assumptions and arguments seems cogent but after looking more in details we can see flawns through his memo due to unsupported arguments.
Firstly, the advertising director doesn't mention enough details about the report from the marketing department. One might be left confused regarding how the "attendance" is assesed in this report; is it based on people who went to see the movie at a Cinema? Who purchased the movie on DVD? Who watched it On Demand? Those would give various attendancy for a specific movie, therefore giving erroneous data if only one is assesed and not the others.
Secondly, the author mentioned that there is a decrease in their audience and that this outcome is due to a lack of awareness from people about the quality of the specific movies. However few other reasons can be plausible in the diminishing numbers. For example, the recession is still affecting most of the people though they can't afford to pay to go to the cinema. Another explanation could be the fact that technology such as On Demand allow you to watch new movies from your own couch, therefore less people will go to the cinema.
Thirdly, the author is highlighting the increase of positive reviews for certain movie as a proof endorsing the quality of the movie his company produce. But from this conclusion, one might also conclude that the movie produce, despite being of good quality, are only directed toward a specific audience. There is tons of small producing company who are presented at the Oscars every year but that none of us has heard of as it his of specific taste and usually not for the general viewers who seeks entertainment.
To conclude, the advertising director is probably going the wrong direction by investing more money into advertising to bring crowds. Maybe the best option would be to diversify the type of movie produce by his company to attract more viewers.
