I joined the Liberian Bank for development and Investment as an entry level staff (Account Officer P1) in 2010 with in the Account department at which time the Bank was migrating to new banking software. I was designated to head a team of four staffs to work with the programmer and ensure that various financial and regulatory reports that were manually prepared using excel are automatic and incorporated into the new banking software. This task required high concentration, sensitivity and extra hours. I encourage my team member by leading by example; I was always the first at work and last to left office ensuring that all of the assigned tasks are completed by each member daily. We executed our responsibilities with diligent and vigor taking deadline into consideration which enable us to complete the task far before deadline. Currently all Financial and regulatory report are generated automatically.
In 2013 after the establishment of the Financial Intelligent Unit of Liberia and the enactment of the AML/CFT law of Liberia combine with a robust global AML/CFT regime which led to the big banks being fine and the closure of correspondents banking relationships with banks in Africa and other parts of the world with weak AML/CFT regime. There was a need for the creation of a specific unit to oversee the AML/CFT regime within the bank, work with all the regulatory agencies as well as the correspondent banks to ensure full compliant with the AML/CFT law and maintain relationship with correspondent banks.
I was promoted from Account Officer (P1) to Officer in-Charge (P3) as head of the newly created Compliance Unit supervising and leading a team of 21(twenty–one) staffs across the bank network (18 branches). I worked with my team in developing a comprehensive compliance program that covers the bank internal policies, AML/CFT law, and other regulation that applied to the banking sector. I supervised and monitor the conduct of compliance risk assessment, regular training of new and existing staff on AML/CFT activities and new development within the regulatory space; acted as the liaison between the bank and all regulatory institutions, coordinated external examination, updated policies to take into account relevant changes, advice management and the Board of Directors on the compliance status of the bank from time to time.
To date, there has been no sanction, penalty, fine nor any investigative regulatory requests for non-compliance and the bank has a total of5 (Five). Correspondent banks from 3 (three) in 2013.
Given my leadership abilities, networking and problem solving skills amongst my staff, regulators, senior management, and the Board of Directors; I was again given a double promotion from Officer in-Charge (P3) Compliance Unit to Vice-President Compliance and Investigation Department (P5) as head of the two units( Compliance and Investigation) which was merge into a full Department.
Huge percentage of the Liberian population have no access to the formal financial system, which clearly means more work is needed to include these people into the financial system thereby giving them access to financial service and product that will eventually provide opportunities to improve their lives.
In 2014 a colleague and I established a community based saving club with the objective to mobilize resources among members, provide loan for its members and other entrepreneurs at an affordable interest rates as well as the provision of basic financial training for the extension and development of SME and help them become self-sufficient.
I headed and carry out the financial training program on various topics: to include writing a Business plan, creating and managing a budget for a start-up business, Understanding basic investment principles etc. Through this initiative I have been able to train and help over 200 SME develop their businesses to the next level.
